Darnaby and YOU

Darnaby is known for its interactive and expansive after-school programs that push the curriculum taught in the classroom to the next level, but we also want to serve our students who may need additional help to master the curriculum taught in the classroom during the school day. This is where YOU come in. Reading Partners and Math Mentors are outside organizations that are focused on providing additional support in both reading and math. Both Reading Partners and Math Mentors will be housed here at Darnaby and will be targeting those students who need just a little bit of help to get them back on track. They do this by training volunteers like YOU, to become mentors. So, to offer this opportunity to our students, we need YOU.

Darnaby is excited to partner with Reading Partners to offer our student's intervention support. Reading Partners empowers students to develop mastery of key reading skills through data-informed, curriculum-driven, one-on-one tutoring led by trained volunteers. Student-tutor pairs work together for 45 minutes twice per week, following a structured, and research-based curriculum. Each student has an individualized reading plan based on ongoing student skill assessments to tailor instruction to each student’s unique needs and strengths.

To better serve our students who need additional help with math skills, Darnaby will be partnering with TRSA and their Math Mentor Program: Me and My Math Mentor (M4). M4 is a hybrid model that incorporates evidence-based practices for accelerating student gains to combat learning loss through high-dosage tutoring and improving students' sense of belonging and well-being through positive adult interactions. The M4 model creates educational interactions with community volunteers who mentor students through mathematical practice activities in a fun, non-judgmental space.

We encourage YOU to think about volunteering twice a week to help us better serve our students. We need a minimum commitment of 45 minutes a week but would prefer 90 minutes (about 1 and a half hours) so students can build a foundation of trust with their mentor. We can't wait to work with YOU this school year!
